I used to believe that good hair days were simply a lucky ‘once-in-the-blue-moon’ occurrence, and that if you thought waking up every day to have your locks just effortlessly fall in to place was possible then you’re living in some kinda dream world where the Kardashian’s stylist Jen Atkin is on standby and soft beachy waves just… Happen.
But when we do get that odd Good Hair Day? Suddenly life is oh-so good! As sickly shallow as it may sound – I feel like when your hair is on point, you can take on anything the day throws at you; whether it’s that important presentation you’ve been frantically preparing for or that hot date you’ve been, well, frantically exfoliating for.
So why let the way your hair is going dictate your day? Ultimately, you have control of your own life – and your own hair, for that matter. You just gotta find the right products out there to give you that little extra helping hand. Sure, it isn’t an easy game – but once you have your staple routine, you’re pretty much set!
Hell, I am definitely not saying a perfect parting is the answer to all of our problems in life (if only things were that simple!), but it sure doesn’t do any harm to feel good about yourself either. A little confidence can take you a hell of a long way. My Grandmother always says ‘If you have groomed hair and nails, then you will always look put together’. Believe me when I say that that woman knows about life. Preach it, Elizabeth Anne!
Because my hair is so thick, I have always struggled with finding products that don’t weigh my hefty locks down. If I had a pound for the amount of times I have bought in to a new brand hoping for gleaming results only to feel like my hair hasn’t been slathered with grease right after washing it, I probably would be able to afford the Kardashian’s very own stylist. (‘So I’m thinking we can totally afford to do a little more wave, don’t ya think Jen?’)
Furthermore, the hair care industry is so vast that we are constantly swamped with cleverly marketed products that all claim to do the same thing: Give your hair shine, strength and a whole lot of shampoo-ad worthy sexiness. It goes with out saying that every individual is different and it really is a case of ‘trial and error’ before you find the staple products that work for you and your hair type – but if you’re on the look out to try something new, then perhaps my latest collection will be of interest…
First up, we have the shampoo and conditioner combo that I was recently sent by natural hair brand Biolage Raw. I had been using the Faith in Nature products for a while, but my hair was beginning to get a little bored and I think it’s always cool to keep things fresh and change products up every now and then. If you’re about that paraben-free/natural beauty life – then the The Biolage R.A.W Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner are pretty hot contenders! These guys make their hair products with out parabens, silicones or colourants – yet the feeling they give you the moment you lather that sweet smelling goodness in to the hair is beyond blissful. Made with quinoa husk and honey, this is great for dry hair that needs a little love and affection – so as someone who frequently whips out my GHD’s, this was perfect!
Which brings me on to my next product: The Phytokeratine heat protection spray. Right before I go over my hair with the blow dryer, I generously spray on this split-end-repairing product which smells like an absolute dream, acts as a protective shield on the hair and locks in the moisture right before you go in with the hot stuff. It was my hairdresser that introduced me to this and I had already ordered my own bottle before I’d even stepped out of the salon… That’s how much I rated it. The bonus? It is both paraben and silicone free. And French. What’s not to like?
I also like to apply some goods to assist with the whole, you know, styling thing. Whilst I’m still patiently waiting for the day I wake up to naturally perfect tousled waves, it can’t hurt to have a little help from the hair-savvy guys at Bumble and Bumble, right? I rather enjoy a generous spritz of their Prep spray whilst my hair is still damp – not only because it gives me feel like one of the pro’s you see on Youtube – but also because it helps to detangle those awkward knots and to boost your hair with a whole host of fancy shmancy active ingredients, like fortifying vitamin E and sea kelp. This is basically the hair equivalent to your pre-foundation primer as it helps any products you apply after take full effect – and I personally find it delivers everything that the bottle promises. Also, it smells nice.
Alright – so once my hair is washed, protected and dried (I usually go over it with the dryer and let it dry naturally – if I have the time), I use my faithful GHD straighteners to loosely add curls all around my head. The secret to making them look more natural as opposed to tight angel locks (not so much my jam) is to do them in different sizes – that way it doesn’t look too uniform; too perfect. I remember reading that in Lauren Conrad’s ‘Style’ book back in good old The Hills’ days – so you know it’s gotta be like, a totally legit hair rule to live by, right?
I’ll then use my Ouai Soft Hairspray to keep it in place, which never ever fails to seal the deal with out giving that icky-sticky feeling. And for the finishing touch? I’ll add just one small squeeze of the Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine in my palms before scrunching it through the ends of my hair to give that ‘I woke up like this’ kind of vibe.
And with that, this girl is ready for whatever the world throws at her. Or, you know, something like that.
If you have any can’t-live-without hair products you want to share, then I’d love to know what you’ve been rating lately!
